Do the Early Pregnancy Serum Levels of VEGF & PlGF Predict the Onset of Preeclampsia: An Experience from a Tertiary Center

This study was conducted to evaluate the utility of serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and placental growth factor (PlGF) levels in prediction of preeclampsia. Serum samples were obtained from 72 pregnant women before 20 weeks of gestation and the levels of VEGF and PlGF were analysed using ELISA. All women were followed up till delivery for the onset of preeclampsia and any other complications. Maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared between preeclamptic and normotensive women. Out of 72 women, there were 9 pre-eclamptic and 63 normotensive women. The values of VEGF and PlGF were lower in preeclamptic group than normotensive women but not statistically significant. The optimal cut-off value of VEGF was < 95.38 mIU/mL with 78% sensitivity and 54% specificity in prediction of preeclampsia while that of PlGF is < 377.30 mIU/ml with 55% sensitivity and 52% specificity. It was inferred that the levels of VEGF and PlGF are altered in early gestation in preeclamptic women and the lower levels of these angiogenic factors have moderate sensitivity and specificity for prediction of pre-eclampsia.
