<p>Health care reforms, economization, and regulatory restriction of the freedom and scope of action during the past 30 years significantly impacted university hospital-based oral and maxillofacial surgery. Guidelines and standard operative procedures are an expression of evidence-based medicine but also of normalization. The dentistry part of our discipline has proofed to be essential. The fusion between the former professional society of oral and maxillofacial surgeons and the scientific society in 2000 has been a visionary step.</p>
