Drug-based tumor therapy has become considerably more important in recent years. In the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, however, the majority of centers of excellence providing treatment are still largely in the hands of other medical specialities. The continuous increase in knowledge in all areas of organ cancer disciplines as well as the increasing expansion of molecular tumor boards and extended sequencing options promote identification of potentially targetable tumor changes. In our drug therapy outpatient clinic, we are also observing that even already approved therapeutics enable significant improvements in survival rates for oral squamous cell carcinoma patients in off-label use. The potential of drug-based tumor therapy is far from exhausted, and the extension of approval for some drugs after careful examination is proving to be extremely promising.
