Abstract <p>Yeasts of the <i>Candida</i> genus are opportunistic pathogens that may be associated with various oral diseases.</p> Purpose of the Review <p>The aim of this review is to explore the potential involvement of <i>Candida</i> species in periodontal disease.</p> Findings <p>The literature suggests that the presence of <i>Candida</i> species, especially when found in association with periodontopathogenic bacteria, may be related to the development and progression of periodontal disease.</p> Summary <p>Although Candida spp. are not traditionally considered primary periodontal pathogens, increasing evidence points to their possible role in exacerbating periodontal inflammation, particularly in immunocompromised individuals or in cases of microbial imbalance. These fungi can interact synergistically with bacterial pathogens, potentially contributing to biofilm complexity and enhancing tissue destruction. Additionally, Candida spp. possess virulence factors such as adhesion, biofilm formation, and enzyme production that may influence disease progression. Further research is needed to clarify their exact role and pathogenic mechanisms in periodontal disease, which could open new avenues for diagnosis and targeted therapy.</p>
