Primary Cutaneous Trichosporonosis

The trichosporonosis is an opportunistic mycosis caused by Trichosporon species. The cutaneous manifestations have been previously described in very few patients, with localized or disseminated skin lesions. This study aims to provide information on demographics and dermatological manifestations in patients with this infection.

In the last decades, Trichosporon spp. has been recognized as an opportunistic pathogen capable of causing invasive diseases, not just in immunosuppressed but also in immunocompetent patients. 

Cutaneous trichosporonosis can affect both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients, presenting primarily papules, erythema and fine scale. Dissemination can occur throughout the skin and liver as most common sites. The acknowledgement of its existence, the recognition of the clinical presentation and the combination of diagnostic methods is vital for an accurate identification of the causal agent.
