Die tödliche Gefahr aus den peruanischen Anden
摘要
Bartonella bacilliformis is the etiological agent of the biphasic Carrión’s disease, endemic to the Andean highlands of South America. Infections with this human-pathogenic bacterium cause Oroya fever (acute phase) characterized by a severe hemolytic anemia with mortality rates reaching up to 88 % often followed by angioproliferative skin lesions (verruga peruana; chronic phase). Despite its medical importance, infection biology of B. bacilliformis and virulence determinants are largely unknown. Rising ciprofloxacin resistance and the climate-driven expansion of vector habitats underscore the urgent need for novel therapeutic approaches.
