<p><i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> is a notorious bacterial pathogen. It colonises the anterior nares of humans and can cause life-threatening invasive diseases when it is transferred in open wounds. In this article we explain the many facettes of <i>S. aureus</i> pathogenicity in the light of human immune defence strategies. Additionally, we outline the potential of the nasal microbiome to prevent <i>S. aureus</i> colonisation and infection.</p>
