<p>Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile DNA sequences that have shaped genomes throughout evolution. In <i>Drosophila melanogaster</i>, LTR elements, TEs that are related to retroviruses, such as the <i>copia</i> retrotransposon persist and some are actively expressed. Using cryo-ET, we visualized <i>copia</i> and discovered its association with nuclear pores, suggesting NPC-mediated translocation of entire virus-like particles. Our study demonstrates the power of cryo-ET for studying mobile genetic elements <i>in situ</i>.</p>
