<p>Long-read sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and the adjacent ITS region on the PacBio platform paved the way for a rapid and cost-effective initial characterization of non-axenic cyanobacteria. 16S-ITS profiling in combination with metagenome sequencing revealed an astonishing diversity of up to 80 stably associated bacteria. The hidden biodiversity of these microbiomes includes bacteria from so far uncultivated taxa up to the phylum level, making them treasure troves for microbiologists.</p>
