<p>Macrophages utilise the acidification of their luminal pH to inhibit the proliferation of pathogens. pH-sensitive fluorophores such as pHrodo Red enable real-time monitoring of this phagosomal acidification. Following endosomal uptake of pHrodo Red beads by macrophages, the low phagosomal pH results in a measurable increase in fluorescence intensity. Compared to conventional techniques this method offers a fast and automated way of analysing fluorescence intensity that can save time and money.</p>
