<p>The production of “green” methanol from carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) and renewable energy by Power-to-X technologies closes the carbon cycle while exploiting atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> as sustainable feedstock. In this context, microbial methanol fermentation becomes an important approach to extend the range of methanol-derived products. History, current status and outlook of methanol fermentation is summarized and highlighted with the example of a recently engineered strain producing glycolic acid from methanol.</p>
