摘要

Biodiversity monitoring is urgently needed in times of global change. Traditional methods reach their limits, especially when it comes to monitoring the huge diversity of small organisms. Genetic methods, especially DNA metabarcoding, enable analyses of large sample sizes and can support monitoring. So far metabarcoding has been limited by high costs, a lack of standards, and incomplete reference databases. Methodological advancements make it now possible to integrate metabarcoding into biodiversity monitoring. We demonstrate the scalability of this approach based on results from large-scale insect monitoring in Germany.
