State-of-the-art light and electron microscopy and correlative approaches have shed light on host-pathogen interactions of various infection diseases. Today, a wide range of methods are available, including non-invasive fluorescence-based live-cell imaging approaches, as well as high-resolution 3D (cryo-)transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Here, we present strategies to investigate host-pathogen interactions with highest spatiotemporal resolution using Salmonella enterica as an example.
