The enzyme nitrogenase is described to catalyze the “biological version” of the Haber-Bosch reaction, the reductive fixation of atmospheric N2 gas into a bioavailable form. While formally correct, our current understanding of the mechanism of this remarkable enzyme reveals the astounding degree of finetuning that is required to carry out the most challenging reductive catalysis found in nature under mild conditions and in an aqueous environment.
