Up to 80 % of European men experience some degree of male-pattern hair loss (MPHL) during their lifetime. The condition is highly heritable and current treatment options are limited, emphasizing the need for a better understanding of its biological causes. In recent years, molecular genetic studies have provided significant insights into the genetic and biological causes of MPHL. This article summarizes important findings and discusses their potential for improving hair loss prediction and treatment.
