Screen Addiction and Digital Well-Being Among the Surgeons
摘要
In an era dominated by screens, digital device overuse has become a pervasive issue affecting all demographics, including healthcare professionals. Excessive screen time, especially smartphone usage, is now linked to physical ailments such as eye strain, poor posture, and sedentary lifestyles, as well as psychological challenges like anxiety, depression, digital dementia, addictive online gambling and deteriorating interpersonal relationships. Among physicians and surgeons, screen use is increasingly prevalent, often exceeding five hours daily, with a substantial impact on sleep and mental health. Internet addiction, characterized by compulsive online behavior and neglect of offline responsibilities, is rising among doctors and residents, further contributing to stress and burnout. A digital detox—a conscious disengagement from devices—can improve sleep, mental clarity, productivity, and social bonds. Practical strategies such as tech-free zones, scheduled screen breaks, and nature-based activities can facilitate this. Surgeons, whose work demands precision and focus, may particularly benefit from digital detoxification to safeguard both personal well-being and professional efficacy.
