Mortality of Critically Ill Trauma Patients Before and After Setting Up of a Dedicated Trauma Centre in a Tertiary Hospital of Eastern India

Incidence of trauma is on the rise all over the world. Timely management of trauma patients is necessary to reduce both mortality and morbidity. Trauma care is provided in a wide range of health care facilities ranging from district hospitals to trauma centres, the latter of which have the resources and capabilities necessary to provide specialised trauma services. The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGME&R) is a medical college in Eastern India with a functioning trauma centre since 2019. In this study, we aimed to determine the association between opening a dedicated trauma centre and outcomes in critically ill patients. We analysed data of critically ill trauma patients aged at least 18 years. We compared patient mortality before the trauma centre opened (from January 2016 to June 2019) and after the trauma centre opened (from July 2019 to December 2022). We included a total of 1487 patients. Before the trauma centre opened, 487 critically ill trauma patients were included, with a 35% survival rate. After it opened, 1000 patients were included, and the survival rate increased to 65%. The opening of a trauma centre was associated with a dramatic effect on survival in critically ill trauma patients. Trial registration number NCT02838459 (July 2016) NCT03235388 (August 2017).
