Gastric Xanthogranuloma: A Rare Mimicker of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor

Xanthogranuloma is a mass forming lesion that is macroscopically characterized by the formation of golden yellow to bright yellow nodules. It is usually seen in the gall bladder and kidney, However other organs have been reported to be affected although not that frequently. Its presentation is varied and mimics neoplastic lesions especially in the Gall bladder where it forms an important differential in mass forming lesions. To the best of our knowledge, less than 12 cases of xanthogranuloma of the stomach have been reported. We report a rare case of a Gastric submucosal exophytic lesion with surrounding adhesions which was taken up for extensive surgical resection in view of preoperative diagnosis of Gastric GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor). This case highlights the diagnostic pitfall and the awareness of this non-neoplastic entity.
