Performance Analysis of Rectifier Circuits for Claw-Pole Synchronous Generators: A Comparative Simulation

Claw Pole Synchronous Generators (CPSGs) are still a popular and useful technology for internal combustion engine automobiles and/or hybrid electric vehicles. Only in recent years, the design of permanent magnet (PM) in the rotor of CPSGs instead of the brush-ring arrangement is being used for higher performance and reduced maintenance requirements. In this study, a 4-pole PM-CPSG with a power of 0.55 kW and different stator phase winding design has been realized by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) electromagnetic modeling and performance analysis of rectifier circuits in power electronics software (ANSYS-Electronics) with co-simulation. Electrical comparisons of the number of phases in the rectifier circuits such as the ripple of the DC-output voltage and the harmonic components of the stator phase currents are given in graphs. Thus, an innovative approach is proposed for today’s hybrid electric vehicles with higher power requirements by combining CPSG design approach and rectifier circuits.
