<p><i>Eriocaulon</i> and <i>Paepalanthus</i> are the most speciose genera of Eriocaulaceae, presenting many nomenclatural and taxonomic problems. In this manuscript, we clarify the intricate nomenclatural and taxonomic confusion regarding the names <i>Eriocaulon elichrysoides</i> Bong. and <i>Paepalanthus helichrysoides</i> Kunth, as well as all homotypic associated names corresponding to two distinct entities. We provide complete species headings by evaluating all names, protologues, and type specimens. A discussion of the names’ histories and uses is also included, highlighting some names that were forgotten or avoided in the past. We also select a lectotype for <i>Paepalanthus helichrysoides</i> Kunth.</p>
