<p>Although molecular phylogenetic studies show conclusively that Convolvulaceae is monophyletic, no diagnostic morphological synapomorphies are known to be present in all of its members. Within the family, apparent high levels of parallel and convergent evolution underlie a complex systematic and taxonomic history. Molecular and morphological datasets are gradually being compiled to improve the current classification of the tribes. To augment the body of potentially informative morphological datasets, in this work we present the most comprehensive survey to date of seedling and cotyledon characters for the family and discuss their relevance for infrafamilial classification. Seedlings of 17 genera and 40 species are described and illustrated. The observable patterns in cotyledon characters appear to correspond with deep nodes in the phylogeny of the family: smaller, unlobed, entire cotyledons are present in the clades /Dicranostyloideae and tribe Cardiochlamyeae, while larger, apically lobed cotyledons typify the clade /Convolvuloideae as currently circumscribed. Further taxon sampling is suggested to improve the understanding of phylogenetic relationships within the family.</p>
