Nomenclatural and botanical history of the Cuban endemic palm Coccothrinax crinita (R.D.Hoyt) Becc.
摘要
The old man palm (Coccothrinax crinita (R.D.Hoyt) Becc. subsp. crinita) is a Western Cuban endemic from the province of Artemisa. The taxon has an additional morph (C. crinita subsp. brevicrinis Borhidi & Muñiz) restricted to the southeastern-central Cuban provinces of Cienfuegos and Sancti Spíritus. Hybrids between the latter and C. miraguama (Kunth) Beccari subsp. miraguama are taxonomically recognised as C. ×angelae D.Suárez. The botanical history of these species is reviewed, and their nomenclature is revisited. Thrinax crinita R.D.Hoyt is lectotypified and an epitype is designated for this taxon. Archival research at the University of South Florida Libraries – Tampa Special Collections and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew shows that botanists working in this botanic garden played a significant role in the early taxonomic and horticultural history of this species.
