Aristolochia tica (Aristolochiaceae), an endangered new species from Costa Rica
摘要
Aristolochia tica J.E.Jiménez & M.A.Blanco is described and illustrated. This species is endemic to southern Costa Rica and, despite its striking flowers, had never been documented or collected until recently. It is distinguished by its slightly bullate leaves, atrophied prophylls (pseudostipules), multi-flowered inflorescences that are produced both on young stems with leaves and mature, leafless stems (the latter reaching 62 cm in length), flowers with a 1-lobed, peltate, orbicular to suborbicular limb, with the lower margin rounded to subcordate, the sinus 1 mm deep, centrally yellow and peripherally dark purple with cream radial markings, and straight, fusiform fruits. It is most similar to the Amazonian A. floribunda Lem.; the latter name and its synonym A. juruana Ule are lectotypified here. A detailed comparison of these taxa and A. odoratissima L. is presented. The highly restricted geographic distribution of A. tica underscores its vulnerability to potential habitat loss. According to the IUCN Red List criteria, A. tica should be classified as Critically Endangered (CR). A key to the Costa Rican species of Aristolochia series Hexandrae subseries Hexandrae is presented.
