摘要

The grass genus Paspalum is the largest genus in the subfamily Panicoideae, with a wide distribution throughout the American continent. Its species are located mainly in tropical areas, encompassing the Brazilian Cerrado, where the greatest diversity is noted, alongside the grasslands of Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil. Moreover, certain species are also present in other regions like Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. In this paper, we describe and illustrate a new species of Paspalum, comparing it with the morphologically similar P. lenticulare and P. oteroi, provide a distribution map and evaluate its conservation status. This research utilised plant collection specimens from southern Bahia, Brazil, and included a thorough herbarium and literature review. The conservation assessment was based on field observations and spatial analyses, conducted according to IUCN guidelines and criteria. During the review of species of the Paspalum Plicatula group in Brazil, a specimen displaying morphological characteristics distinct from those previously documented was encountered. A comprehensive morphological analysis was undertaken, revealing its identity as a new species of Paspalum within the Plicatula group. This newly identified species was collected 35 years ago in Nova Viçosa, a municipality located in the southern region of Bahia state, in a restinga area predominantly characterised by the Atlantic Forest biome. With the description of P. bahianum, the total count of Paspalum species in the state of Bahia increases to 76, with 52 of them known to have distributions in the Atlantic Forest biome.
