Bending fatigue and impact strength of repeated case-carburized gears

Repeated case carburizing (RCC) is expected to increase the number of gears placed in a furnace at a time, and realize more cost-effective and flexible case carburizing. This study experimentally investigated the influence of RCC of up to five cycles with the same total carburizing and diffusion times on bending fatigue and impact strength of SCM420H spur gears. The RCC caused coarse grains near tooth root surfaces. Moreover, the RCC reduced the bending fatigue limit (BFL) and impact limit energy (ILE) from three and two cycles, respectively. The percentage reduction in ILE was greater than that in BFL. Both the BFL and ILE tended to decrease with increasing effective case depth. ILE also roughly tended to decrease with increasing area ratio of coarse grains. Thus, we should pay attention to RCC from two cycles, and more attention to the reduction in ILE than that in BFL.
