Analytical study on evaluating the effectiveness of existing measurement sites for predicting global horizontal solar insolation (GHI) including the daily peak GHI for non-measured sites

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) operates 44 global horizontal insolation (GHI) measurement sites and attempts to add more sites to meet diverse needs and increase spatial resolution. Previous studies used daily or monthly total solar insolation to evaluate accuracy; however, in this study, the daily peak GHI was specifically used to verify the results more clearly. For this purpose, this study considered nine and six cases in which four or three sites, respectively, surround one site as the center in a quadrangle or triangle among KMA ASOS sites. The averaged data of the vertices and the center data including the peak were compared and analyzed with various error parameters. Through this, it was found that as the side length increased, the accuracy changed and the close correlation between the GHIs of the vertices and the center was confirmed. Based on the results, it is believed that a reference or standard for expanding measurement sites can be established.
