An experimental study on the influence of fiber layering direction on drilling quality of CFRP pipes

In order to reveal the influence of fiber layering direction on drilling quality, three different laying directions (0°, 45°, and 90°) of CFRP pipes were customized for experimental and simulation studies. The thrust force, the damage of convex drilling hole exit and concave drilling hole entry were analyzed. For convex drilling, the main hole exit damages of the 0° layering direction pipes are delamination and burrs, while the damages of the 45° and 90° layering directions pipes are uncut materials and tearing. The convex drilling hole exit with a 0° layering direction has the smallest damage. The main defects at the hole entry of concave drilling are uncut materials and its accompanying tearing, which are concentrated at fiber cutting angles of 97-155°. The fiber orientation can affect the cutting angle of fibers and the magnitude of initial stress in fibers, leading to different hole entry and exit damage. To achieve better drilling quality of CFRP pipes, it is recommended to lay the inner wall fibers at angle 0° or 90°, with a feed rate of less than 0.03 mm/r.
