Effects of evaporator wettability on the start-up and heat transfer performance of an oscillating heat pipe
摘要
Improved wettability of the boiling surface can significantly enhance the efficiency of boiling heat transfer. Wettability, characterized in terms of contact angle (CA) is the same (CA 30°) on all sections in a conventional oscillating heat pipe (COHP). Studies on the effect of wettability on the individual sections of the COHP is relatively scarce. Therefore, in the present study, three different OHPs having different evaporator wettability, namely superhydrophilic (CA 1°), hydrophilic (CA 78°), and super-hydrophobic (CA 154°), were numerically investigated. The effect of different evaporator wettability on the start-up characteristics, and heat transfer performance was studied for different filling ratios (FRs) of 30 %–90 %. OHP with a super-hydrophobic (CA 154°) evaporator had the lowest start-up time along with higher slug motion for all FRs. OHP with a hydrophilic (CA 78°) evaporator had the highest heat transfer performance, with a mean heat transfer coefficient of 1105 W/m2K at an FR of 70 %.
