Child Deprivation and Multidimensional Child Poverty Among Children Under Five Years in an Urban Slum in Enugu State, Nigeria: Evidence Based on Health, Housing and Sanitation Dimensions And Indicators
摘要
Poverty, which implies various forms of deprivation, afflicts children most and children under five years are the most vulnerable group among the children. Also, living in slums put children under five years at greater risk of poverty. Regrettably, child deprivation and child poverty among children under five years living in slums, based on multidimensional approach have not been adequately analysed in Nigeria. This study, among other things, examines the extent of child deprivation and multidimensional child poverty among children under five years in an urban slum in Enugu State, Nigeria, based on health, housing and sanitation dimensions/indicators. The study, among other things, utilises a sample survey carried out in 2019 as well as the Alkire-Foster (AF) counting approach to multidimensional poverty measurement. The study finds that, in general, child deprivation and multidimensional child poverty are pervasive in the slum. Thus, there is need for adequate policies and programmes that will optimally tackle child deprivation and multidimensional child poverty in slums in Enugu State and in Nigeria. Suffice it to say that such will ultimately bring about tremendous reduction in child deprivation and child poverty in the State and in the Country.
