Executive function–related indicators of emergent reasoning in autistic children living in post-earthquake regions: A convergent mixed-methods study

This study examined the relationship between executive function performance and parent-reported executive-function-related indicators of emergent reasoning in autistic children aged 3–8 years living in regions affected by the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. A convergent mixed-methods design was used to integrate qualitative and quantitative data collected within the same general post-earthquake period. The qualitative strand involved semi-structured interviews exploring parental perspectives on EF-related reasoning behaviors, whereas the quantitative strand used performance-based EF tasks administered with linguistically adapted Turkish instructions and standardized task procedures to examine children’s working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control. The study did not employ a direct standardized measure of emergent reasoning; instead, emergent reasoning was operationalized through developmentally appropriate EF-related behaviors, including rule adaptation, alternative generation, task persistence, working memory, and response regulation. Data were collected approximately 32–34 months post-earthquake to examine convergence between parent-reported lived experiences and task-based EF performance. Qualitative findings revealed that parents perceived emergent reasoning through rule-based frameworks and frequently described difficulties in flexibility and alternative generation. Quantitative results indicated relatively lower performance in cognitive flexibility and working memory compared with inhibition within the present sample. Integrated analysis suggested that post-disaster educational instability and disrupted routines may provide an important contextual framework for understanding parent-reported EF-related reasoning difficulties. The findings point to the potential value of targeted EF-based instructional supports, brief family guidance strategies, and continuity-oriented post-disaster rehabilitation services. These implications should be interpreted cautiously given the exploratory design and the absence of a direct standardized measure of emergent reasoning.
