Rethinking sensory processing sensitivity: A multidimensional, configurational perspective on adolescent thriving and vulnerability

Adolescence is marked by heightened sensitivity to environmental influences, which may confer both vulnerability and adaptive potential. The present study examined how distinct components of sensory processing sensitivity—emotional reactivity, sensitivity to subtle cues, and low sensory threshold—relate to psychological functioning during adolescence in the context of ongoing societal stress. A sample of 1,659 adolescents (ages 13–19) completed measures of thriving, posttraumatic stress symptoms, prosocialness, personality traits, family functioning, and community resilience. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) indicated that emotional reactivity and low sensory threshold were associated with higher distress and lower levels of thriving. In contrast, sensitivity to subtle cues was associated with higher thriving, greater prosocialness, and lower distress. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) identified four distinct sensitivity profiles: high sensitivity, mixed sensitivity, moderate sensitivity, and a low reactivity–high cue sensitivity profile. Profiles differed significantly across outcomes. The low reactivity–high cue sensitivity profile demonstrated the most adaptive pattern, whereas the high sensitivity profile showed elevated distress alongside increased prosocialness. These findings highlight the multidimensional nature of sensitivity and underscore the importance of distinguishing between its components to better understand adolescent adaptation, particularly during a developmental period in which heightened sensitivity may amplify both vulnerability and opportunities for adaptive engagement.
