The Intersection of social justice and left-wing political beliefs, antisemitism, and perceptions of Israelis and Palestinians
摘要
This research explored how antisemitism (in particular, Antizionist antisemitism) overlaps with left-wing ideologies. Across three samples (N = 2,256) with preregistered hypotheses, we examined how critical social justice attitudes and left-wing authoritarianism relate to Judeophobic and Antizionist antisemitism, and to perceptions of Israelis. In Study 1, CSJA and LWA were linked with Antizionist antisemitism and negative moral perceptions of Israelis (i.e., less trustworthy, ethical), but unrelated or negatively related to Judeophobic antisemitism. Viewing Israelis as “white” intensified negative evaluations among participants higher in left-wing attitudes. Studies 2a–b used vignettes to test anti-Jewish double standards in policy judgments. Again, left-wing attitudes predicted selective moral disapproval towards Jews and Israel, especially around national loyalty and military service, though some scenarios yielded null or reverse effects. Overall, left-wing beliefs are aligned with increased anti-Jewish bias in many, but not all contexts, highlighting the nuanced associations between social justice attitudes and antisemitism.
