The relationship between social physique anxiety and physical activity in adolescence and young adulthood: a meta-analysis
摘要
This study aimed to explore how social physique anxiety is associated with physical activity in adolescents and young adults through meta analysis integrating previous empirical studies and to explore the possible influencing factors therein. This study was pre-registered under the ID CRD42024553028. Following database searches and screening procedures, a total of 36 empirical studies were included in the analysis, encompassing 44 independent effect sizes and 21,496 participants. Using CMA software, analyses were conducted on key aspects of the included literature, including effect sizes, heterogeneity, and moderating variables. Social physique anxiety showed a low degree of negative correlation with physical activity (r =- 0.156) and significant heterogeneity among studies (Q = 247.019, p < 0.001). Multiple regression regression analysis found that the region factor moderated the relationship (Q = 3.94, p < 0.05). An interaction effect analysis found that the interaction effect of the age factor and the gender factor influenced the relationship (Q = 21.979, p < 0.001), as evidenced by a higher negative correlation for young adulthood females than for adolescent females, Q = 7.174, p < 0.05. With the low negative correlation between social physique anxiety and physical activity, future attention should be paid to other factors influencing the relationship, and randomized controlled trials should be conducted to demonstrate the intervention effects of different forms of physical activity on social physique anxiety.
