Taking initiative: green eyes push me to voice for myself. The impact of feelings of being envied on self-interested voice
摘要
Based on uncertainty management theory, this study constructs a relationship between feelings of being envied and self-interested voice and in this process considers the influence of felt uncertainty and the impact of relative deprivation as a mediator and moderator, respectively. Six proposed hypotheses were tested using a three-wave study with data collected from 230 employees. This study discovered a positive relationship between feelings of being envied and self-interested voice, which is mediated by felt uncertainty. The study also showed that relative deprivation moderates the association between feelings of being envied and felt uncertainty, as well as the indirect impact of the relationship between feelings of being envied and self-interested voice via felt uncertainty. This study extends our understanding of the effects of feelings of being envied on employees’ felt uncertainty and self-interested behaviors, offering practical recommendations to managers on how to mitigate employees’ feelings of being envied and felt uncertainty.
