Could occupational well-being contribute to job crafting? The roles of career adaptability and harmony in Chinese workplace

Guided by the broaden-and-build theory together with the career construction model of adaptation, this study examined the associations between occupational well-being and job crafting with the mediating role of career adaptability and the moderating role of harmony in the relations. Six hundred and seventy-five Chinese employees participated in this study via online survey. The results showed that occupational pleasure was positively related to job crafting through career adaptability, whereas occupational displeasure was negatively related to job crafting through career adaptability. Beyond the classical 4-C models of career adaptability, the cooperation dimension in career adaptability also had its unique contributions in the mediation relationships. The moderated mediation analyses further revealed harmony was revealed as a significant moderator in the mediation effects. These findings carried implications for research on occupational well-being and job crafting, and underscored the importance of accounting for interpersonal trait when examining the relations between occupational well-being and job crafting in the Chinese workplace.
