Evolution and trends in visual search research: a 70-year bibliometric exploration (1955–2025)
摘要
Visual search is a fundamental cognitive process that has developed into a key research focus in the field of psychology and neuroscience over several decades. This study employs bibliometric and content analysis of 6,846 articles published between 1955 and 2025 from the Scopus database. Using the R package and VOSviewer, the research identifies influential authors, journals, and significant trends within the literature. The findings show a consistent upward trend in publications, with the United States being a prominent contributor, accounting for over one-third of the total. The journal Attention, Perception, and Psychophysics and the Journal of Vision are the most relevant journals. Analyzing keyword occurrences in the past decade highlights a shift: early research focused on learning, cognition, attention, and perception, while later trends emphasized methodological advancements like N2pc, EEG, and eye tracking. This study is a comprehensive overview of current trends and emerging directions in visual search research, providing valuable insights for academics and professionals.
