A study and development of the measurement of behavioral inhibitory control of substance use among male prisoners in Thailand: a preliminary pilot study
摘要
Inhibitory control (IC) is a core cognitive process that plays a crucial role in compulsive drug-taking among substance abusers. This pilot study aimed to examine and develop a behavioral measure of IC in substance use. Three hundred male inmates with substance use disorders (SUDs) were recruited (N = 300, Mean Age = 38.38 ± 8.02 years). The Behavioral Inhibitory Control Inventory: Substance Use (BICI – SU) was developed, and psychometric properties were evaluated among inmates with SUDs. Statistical analyses were performed using descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), independent samples t-test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). From our results, the BICI – SU consisted of 45 items, consisting of two main components (interference control and response inhibition) and four subcomponents (cognitive inhibition, selective attention, self-control, and discipline). When measured by CFA, the BICI-SU was found to fit well with the observed data, indicating robust structural validity. The criteria of BICI – SU were thus established. The results showed that inmates with SUDs exhibited moderately low levels of IC when assessed using BICI-SU standardized criteria. By examining characteristics of substance use among inmates, our results also demonstrated that types of substance use and duration of substance use exerted an influence on the behavioral IC of substance use, which is consistent with previous research evidence. From these preliminary findings, the BICI-SU has the potential to serve as a screening tool for identifying impairment of IC among individuals with SUDs prior to their participation in rehabilitation programs, leading to better planning strategies of treatment and rehabilitation.
