Meta-stereotypes among depressed individuals and the impact of news media coverage
摘要
This study investigated public stereotypes about depression, depressed students’ meta-stereotypes, and news media influence. The first study using open-ended questionnaires found predominantly negative public stereotypes about depressed individuals. The second study assessing depressed individuals revealed their meta-stereotypes mirrored public views but omitted positive aspects. The third study demonstrated positive news media coverage significantly improved negative meta-stereotypes. Findings indicate news media representations strongly shape depression perceptions, with public stereotypes reflecting news media coverage patterns while depressed individuals internalize these negative views. Importantly, positive news media narratives effectively reduced stigma by altering meta-stereotypes. This work deepens understanding of mental disorder stereotypes and underscores news media’s power in attitude formation. Future research should explore precise news media influence pathways and develop focused interventions to promote social integration for those with depression.
