摘要

Despite growing political division in the United States, many individuals maintain close relationships with others across political lines. However, the dynamics of these relationships and the ways these relationships are maintained has not received extensive attention in prior research. The purpose of our study was to examine if gratitude might be associated with greater openness to cross-party close relationships and if gratitude in the context of a cross-party close relationship might predict a more pro-relationship and partner focus. Our first study utilized a large survey and found that individuals higher in trait gratitude also seem to be more open to cross-party close relationships and that cross-party close relationships that have become strained due to politics are marked by reduced gratitude. Our second study experimentally manipulated gratitude and found that expressing gratitude via a letter to a cross-party close other was associated with reduced concerns about politics coming between the relationship. Overall, these studies provide initial evidence that gratitude may be a tool that helps individuals maintain close relationships across political party lines.
