The association between anxiety and avoidant media coping: exploring gender differences
摘要
Anxiety is a prevalent mental health diagnosis that entails various coping strategies, such as avoidant coping. While research has focused on these strategies in Western contexts, this study shifts the focus to the Arab world, specifically Lebanon, evaluating the impact of media use and avoidant coping on anxiety. Gender differences are also explored. The sample consisted of 672 Lebanese participants aged between 18 and 54 years old. Results indicate that both media use and avoidant coping are significantly associated with anxiety, with third gender individuals reporting significantly higher levels of anxiety, media use, and avoidant coping. These findings highlight the importance of recognizing avoidant coping as a key factor associated with anxiety in Lebanon and call for the reevaluation of the effectiveness of media use as a coping strategy. This becomes particularly relevant for third gender individuals in Lebanon, who may face unique challenges due to their underrepresentation in Arab media.
