The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between workplace incivility (WPI) and work engagement (WKE) among academicians at private universities in China via a parallel chain mediation model consisting of four mediation variables—job insecurity (JI), employee satisfaction (ES), emotional exhaustion (EE), and affective organizational commitment (AC). The results of the hierarchical regression analysis indicate that WPI is positively related to JI and EE but negatively related to ES and AC. Bootstrap analysis reveals that the direct effect of WPI on WKE is masked by the parallel chain mediation effect after the introduction of the mediating variables JI, ES, EE and AC into the relationship between WPI and WKE, forming two indirect paths, WPI → JI → ES → WKE and WPI → EE → AC → WKE. This study highlights three areas of research importance. First, this research checks the parallel chain mediation effects of JI, ES, EE and AC to analyze the relationship between WPI and WKE. Second, our results identify a new mechanism, that is, a masking effect in the negative relationship between WPI and WKE, which extends previous findings. Finally, using cluster analysis, we explore the differences in the path relationships between WPI and JI, ES, EE, AC, and WKE across universities of different natures. Nonetheless, there are a few limitations to this study, such as those related to testing the research hypotheses on the basis of cross-sectional data and the possibility of subjective response bias in self-report questionnaires.

摘要
