The relationship between Zimbardo’s time perspective (TP) and digital addiction has attracted increasing attention in recent years. We conducted a cross-sectional survey with 754 university students in China to investigate the relationship between past-negative time perspective (PNTP) and digital addiction (i.e., problematic smartphone use [PSU], social media addiction [SMA], and gaming disorder [GD]) through the mediating role of depression. Additionally, we investigated if psychological richness moderated this relationship. We tested the theoretical moderated mediation model using structural equation modelling. The results revealed that: (1) Past-negative time perspective was positively associated with digital addiction and that this relationship was mediated by depression. (2) Psychological richness was negatively associated with depression, and (3) Psychological richness enhanced the conditioned relationship between PNTP and digital addiction, suggesting potential compensatory pursuit of heightened pleasantness to offset prior negative experiences. Our study reveals the unique role of PNTP and its interaction with psychological richness for digital addiction. Results provide novel insights into understanding digital addiction.

摘要
