Current status and effectiveness of social support at alleviating trait anxiety in Chinese college students
摘要
Trait anxiety symptoms are relatively severe among university students in China, and social support has a negative effect on trait anxiety. Prior studies on trait anxiety have mostly adopted cross-sectional methods with specific timeframes and small samples, which have yielded only partial inferences and incomplete solutions to the problem. This study aims to accurately evaluate the current status of trait anxiety among Chinese college students and to explore its causes and effective treatment strategies. This paper uses the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale(GAD-7), the Trait Anxiety of University Students Scale(TAUS), and the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), and examines social support as a mediator, to determine, with large sample longitudinal tracking, the overall status and treatment outcomes of trait anxiety in Chinese university students. The results show that the proportion of university students with anxiety disorders is 32.4%, divided into the five trait types of job anxiety, social anxiety, learning anxiety, Health anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation anxiety. The average level of individual trait anxiety was moderate. Through social support activities Like organizing clubs and conducting group psychotherapy, schools could reduce the prevalence of the five types of trait anxiety from 66.1 to 45.1%, and the severity could be reduced from a moderate anxiety level with an average individual score of 10.73 ± 1.06 to a mild level of 8.25 ± 0.71. Additionally, the overall average individual social support score increased from 26.87 ± 2.46 (general level of social support) to 32.39 ± 2.97 (satisfactory level of social support). Club activities and collective psychological therapies were found to play a significant role in addressing the problem of trait anxiety in university students.
