Associations between non-physical bullying victimization, sleep quality, anxiety, and depression in adolescents: a cross-lagged study
摘要
Non-physical bullying victimization posed a serious threat to the mental health of adolescents. However, compared with physical assault, these covert forms are frequently overlooked by teachers due to their less visible nature. The study examined the longitudinal associations between non-physical bullying victimization, sleep quality, and anxiety/depression in adolescents. Cross-lagged analyses with one year interval (Time 1: October 2021; Time 2: October 2022) were conducted on data from 623 adolescents (M = 13.0 years; 52.5% were boys) from a middle school in China. It showed non-physical bullying victimization at T1 significantly predicted sleep quality and anxiety at T2. Sleep quality at T1 significantly predicted non-physical bullying victimization, anxiety, and depression at T2. Anxiety and depression at T1 significantly predicted sleep quality at T2. The study suggests adolescents who experience non-physical bullying subsequently have poorer sleep quality and higher level of anxiety, and that adolescents with sleep problems are subsequently more likely to experience non-physical bullying and have higher levels of anxiety and depression.
