Assessment of alexithymia in Chinese college students: psychometric properties and measurement invariance of the Chinese version of the Perth alexithymia questionnaire
摘要
This study aims to investigate the psychometric properties and measurement invariance of the Chinese version of the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) in a Chinese university student population (n = 740). Firstly, the confirmatory factor analysis results replicate the original bifactor model, including a broad general alexithymia factor, and five narrow factors are negative-difficulty identifying feelings (N-DIF), positive-difficulty identifying feelings (P-DIF), negative-difficulty describing feelings (N-DDF), positive-difficulty describing feelings (P-DDF), and general-externally oriented thinking (G-EOT). Secondly, the measurement invariance of the PAQ was confirmed across different genders, two time points, and different age groups. Finally, the internal consistency coefficients for the dimensions of N-DIF, P-DIF, N-DDF, P-DDF, and G-EOT were good, with Cronbach’s α values of 0.874 to 0.895. The test-retest reliability of the five dimensions and the total scale after a 6-week interval showed a moderate level of correlation, with correlation coefficient values of 0.518 to 0.610. In addition, it also showed good criterion-related validity. It can be concluded that the Chinese PAQ is a valid measure for assessing levels of alexithymia in Chinese university students.
