The influence of the perceived burdensomeness on the efficacy needs: the role of anticipated social exclusion and self-affirmation
摘要
Based on the temporal need-threat model and the three-stage model of self-affirmation, this study examined the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and efficacy needs. Experiments 1 and 2 examined the roles of anticipated social exclusion and self-affirmation, respectively, through manipulations aimed at priming these variables, in the relationship between perceived burdensomeness and efficacy needs. The results revealed that perceived burdensomeness impeded efficacy needs, and this relationship was partially mediated by anticipated social exclusion, while self-affirmation played a buffering role during the initial stage of the mediating process. Specifically, when individuals perceive burdensomeness, self-affirmation reduces the level of anticipated social exclusion, thereby alleviating its negative impact on efficacy needs.
