Mobile phone addiction impairs intuitive eating among Chinese adolescents: A network analysis and a chain mediation model
摘要
Although a few studies have examined the relationship between mobile phone addiction (MPA) and eating disorders, much remains unknown about the impact of MPA on intuitive eating, particularly among adolescents in critical developmental periods. Furthermore, the network-level interactions and mediating mechanisms underlying the association between MPA and intuitive eating remain unclear. The present study aimed to bridge this gap by using network analysis and constructing a serial mediation model with rumination and body appreciation as mediators. Data were collected from 808 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 14.19, SD = 0.92, 50.70% females) using well-validated self-report questionnaires. Results of the network analysis showed that FAL (Feeling anxious and lost) was the most influential node and bridged MPA and intuitive eating (bridge strength 1.916 = strength = 1.542, closeness = 1.934, betweenness = 2.047) at the domain level network. Both item level and domain level network analysis revealed that MPA was negatively associated with intuitive eating. Moreover, the serial mediation analysis showed that the relationship between MPA and intuitive eating was mediated by rumination and body appreciation separately and sequentially. These findings serve as a valuable guide for developing targeted interventions and preventive strategies aimed at reducing excessive mobile phone use, decreasing rumination, and enhancing body appreciation, thereby fostering intuitive eating.
