Unmasking the multidimensional nature of the psychopathy construct on Instagram: Development and validation of the Online Instagram Psychopathy Inventory
摘要
Despite the increasing scholarly interest in studying psychopathy within online platforms, research predominantly utilizes offline measures to assess the psychopathy construct. While these measures provide valuable insights, their ability to capture the unique characteristics of online interactions is limited. This highlights the need for a context-specific measure of psychopathic traits specifically designed to assess these traits as they manifest in cyberspace. Addressing this gap, the current study developed and validated the Online Instagram Psychopathy Inventory (OIPI), a novel tool that assesses psychopathic traits on Instagram and includes three components: Grandiose-Manipulative (GM), Callous-Unemotional (CU), and Impulsive Lifestyle (IL) traits. Using a sample of 490 university students (aged 18 to 46 years; Mean = 23.92, SD = 7.16; 76.32% female), a confirmatory factor analysis supported the OIPI’s three-factor model which was also invariant across gender groups. Furthermore, the OIPI scores were internally consistent, showed convergent validity with another psychopathy measure, and correlated as expected with maladaptive personality traits, supporting the convergent and discriminant validity of the OIPI scores. Overall, findings show that the OIPI possesses robust psychometric properties and offers researchers a tool to explore the multifaceted nature of psychopathy within the online realm. By leveraging the OIPI, researchers can achieve a more complete and nuanced understanding of this intricate construct in cyberspace.
