Echoes of gratitude: linking perceived patient gratitude expression to voice behavior of healthcare workers
摘要
Although a large body of studies have explored the antecedents of voice behavior, few articles have focused on the role of external stakeholders of an organization. Based on the emotions as social information (EASI) theory, we examined the relationship of perceived patient gratitude expression with healthcare workers’ voice behavior and explored the mechanisms and boundary conditions underlying it. We relied on a sample of 273 healthcare workers who completed a questionnaire three times over a month. The results showed that perceived patient gratitude expression is positively related to healthcare workers’ voice behavior through enhancing their psychological need fulfillment. Moreover, gender moderated the relationship between perceived patient gratitude expression and healthcare workers’ psychological need fulfillment, such that a stronger effect was observed among female healthcare workers. These findings yield important implications for both theory and practice.
