Leeks help leeks: a study of peer assistance, performance pressure, and mental well-being in Chinese academia
摘要
This paper investigates the role of colleague assistance in alleviating mental health issues among young social science scholars in Chinese academia, particularly under the “up or out” policy. It emphasizes how support from senior colleagues can mitigate the adverse effects of performance pressure on depression and anxiety. Employing both subjective and objective measures, including the PHQ- 9 and GAD- 7 scales, the study examines the correlation between performance pressure and mental health. Findings indicate that performance pressure is positively correlated with depression and anxiety, while assistance from senior colleagues significantly reduces these effects. The study further highlights the creation of a supportive culture in academia as a means to enhance the well-being of young scholars.
